If you are looking for something a little different to drink, try pomegranate juice. Its sweet, tart and filled with healthy anti-oxidants.
Pomegranate juice is the latest health-drink phenomenon to hit the shelves. Yes, pomegranate juice. Pomegranates aren't a very common fruit, that's for sure.
The pomegranate is an unusual fruit with a thick rind, and filled with little juicy seeds. Actually the juicy little orbs are called arils and there is a tiny edible seed inside each one. They're kind of like really small grapes, all packed inside the fruit. Personally, I find it a bit a pain to dig all edible parts out.
Enough about the fruit, and back to the juice.
It's deep red and has a very tart flavour, with a bit of an astringent aftertaste. Pomegranate juice tastes a lot like cranberry juice actually, though perhaps a little less sour. I found that its not a particularly refreshing drink, and (like cranberry juice) it actually makes me a bit more thirsty after having some.
Finding pomegranate juice as a bottled product is quite new so there are only a few brands to choose from. The most popular and wide-spread is POM, with their distinctive hourglass bottle. You can find pomegranate juice in the cooler section with the other perishable juices, rather than on the shelf with the canned juices.
The biggest health benefit of pomegranate juice is the high anti-oxidant content. You can read more about anti-oxidants on the Natural Medicine site. There are more anti-oxidants in pomegranate juice than in green tea or red wine. There have been a number of scientific studies into the effects of drinking pomegranate juice in a regular basis.
